It seems that popular culture has a budding crush on the Dark Lord. Everywhere you look is a reference to His Infernal Majesty. Perhaps it’s neatly interwoven with the subject matter. Or maybe it’s outright Satanic propaganda! But why? Why now? And why Satan?
It’s a simple answer, really. Autonomy.
Satan has always been the underdog in the Abrahamic mythos. He’s never been the star of the show, but undoubtedly, he’s been the one keeping the show on the road for so long. If there’s no Satan, there’s no need for a “loving” (if that’s what you wanna call it) God (if that’s what you wanna call it: Part 2).
But it’s starting to look as though even that is being turned on it’s head, and rather quickly. Satan is becoming the hero of the story. He’s not just hiding in the shadows anymore. We’re seeing now this grand shift where the Devil is quickly becoming the centerpiece to an epic tale of self-empowerment and opposition to arbitrary and harmful authority, instead of the same old story of submission.
And in this respect, many people who used to cower every time Satan popped up on screen are now cheering for him. Pop culture is taking on the role of Satan’s chariot and the consumers are the horses pulling it. And not with much resistance, either.
Religious groups used to be a force to be reckoned with, and now when they protest and bang their heads together, the crowds line up to see the divine comedy in action. And yes, they’re really starting to think it’s funny.
It’s become very interesting to watch how the villain has become the essential hero, and how the patriarchal king of heaven is currently falling out of popularity.
But really, why is this? Is it the Illuminati’s doing?
Scaring ourselves thinking about an international sect of people in league with the Devil with a mission to dissuade all faith is fun and all, but that’s not it.
It’s the fact that people are waking up from the dream. The Church and it’s crimes against humanity are finally being openly criticized, and more often than ever. Just 50 years ago, it would’ve been considered scandalous had anyone said they weren’t a believer. Careers would’ve ended, family affairs cut short, and perhaps even a direct by-name attack from the clergy. And in some places, this is still a reality. But on the mainstream front, they’re backed into a corner.
It’s no secret that the Catholic Church is ever responsible for harboring and protecting sexual abusers, and especially those that target children, all while preaching the love of Christ and of holiness. The despicable acts of the mainstream religion are pushing people away from their dogma, and directly into the accepting-and consent abiding-arms of Satan. That sort of hypocrisy and downright atrocity is unacceptable, and more people are getting brave enough to call them out on it. Praise Satan for that.
Add to the fact also, that Christianity is known in American culture for being socially conservative, making attempts at stripping away the rights of LGBTQ individuals, as well as harping on about reproductive rights being a manifestation of demonic sacrifice. While not all Christians and Christian organizations are guilty of this, there is something to be said about the sexist and homophobic undertones, at best, overtones at worst, of the majority of Christian thought and practice.
At almost every Pride event, a celebration in which LGBTQ individuals can gather and celebrate who they are in the open, there are bound to be some Bible-thumpers on the sidelines protesting. Often, they’re screaming on and on about how the redeeming love of Christ can convert them to heterosexuality and cisgendered “normalcy.” One would think that common sense would deliver these street preachers the conclusion that they are only further alienating LGBTQ individuals from the message they are trying to send. But, common sense isn’t so common among these types.
These same wastrels often attend protests against Planned Parenthood and abortion clinics, spouting drivel about how the fetus deserves to live and how these unborn children are incarnated by the will of the loving God. Apparently, the will of God is easily dismantled by a single medical procedure. These people care more about their religious opinions than they do for the health of women and potentially child-bearing persons. And so, we see again, another already marginalized group further alienated by the doing of the “representatives of the divine.”
Let’s not forget also, the other forms that individuals have suffered at the hands of the faith. Unfortunately, in past and present, some people have found death to be the consequence of not fitting into religious norms or even for just being socially different and falling victimized to weaponized religion, as seen in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Some cults of Christianity have also encouraged their followers to reject medical care, and to instead rely on the “power of prayer.” Foolishness, yes. But a very real and sinister possibility for those involved.
Perhaps it is these situations that have awakened the logic and reason present within the minds that reject these absurd ideas. Maybe it’s the need for something not so invasive and degrading. For many cases, it is as simple as being that the silliness of the devout has been enough for rationally minded people to make the decision to leave the faith and Church, in search of something more intelligent and grounded in reality.
But the question wasn’t “why not Christ?” It was “why Satan?”
Well, it’s simple really.
Those who are alienated, beaten down, and sneered at by the faithful are fed up with the hypocrisy and idiocy going on. And they’re fighting back, with Satan as the insignia on their armor.
Satan has always pulled the weight of man, gender non-conforming, and womankind’s sins. Without him, there’s no one else for the devout to blame and there’s no needing of a god. But interestingly enough, the people aren’t blaming him anymore. They’re rallying behind him, with his name on the war flag.
For one thing, the Devil has always been the supreme opposition to god, who really matches the description of a tyrant by asking for total submission with very little reward. That is, if you count eternal life still under his rule as a reward. Compare the idea to that of an activist fighting to achieve equal rights for the marginalized against a seemingly all powerful government.
Take away the supernatural element, and they look extremely similar.
It looks as though we’ve reached a turning point that accepts the idea found in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. When the witches gathered together to cast their magic and divine the future, they spoke the words: “Fair is foul, and foul is fair.” The old ideas of Christian “fairness” and purity, in reference to chastity, submission, and patriarchal privilege have become the “foul”. People are acknowledging them for the eye sores that they are. The Satanic virtues of pride, autonomy, and liberty are the embodiment of what once was damnable and “foul” and yet, have become in line with what society now deems fair and wholesome. And with good reason. They are.
Society is finally uncovering the secrets long known by Satanists. Self-empowerment and dignity don’t come from an external deity, but from within one’s own divinity. And no, that didn’t come from a black magic book of clandestine mysteries. It comes from human capability.
And with that said,
